My Favorite Snack

“That looks weird; what are you eating?”🧈🧄🧅 “My favorite snack! It’s a mashed-up avocado mixed with sauerkraut!” “Yeah….that sounds…..interesting…..”❤️✨🔥 Avocado/sauerkraut has been my go-to snack for a few years now. It’s delicious! Has this always been the case? Heck no!❎🚫💞 I didn’t eat avocadoes growing up. I grew up in the sticks and the grocery stores either didn’t have avocadoes or my mom wasn’t hip to the concept of an avocado. It wasn’t til’ I moved to the big city and was exposed to this delicious food called guacamole that my love and appreciation for the avocado began.🏙️🥑 From a health perspective, avocadoes could arguably be one of nature’s most perfect foods. Here’s a few health tidbits pulled from Top 7 Nutrition Facts and Health Benefits of Avocados – Diet Doctor (click on the resource for details):

  • Avocadoes are rich in fiber 🧻📜

  • Avocadoes can improve your lipid profile, decrease oxidation of LDL cholesterol, and allow better absorption of fat-soluble vitamins

  • Avocadoes are high in fiber and low in carbs 🍞🍝

  • Avocadoes are high in calories, therefore, extremely filling due to their fiber and fat content. They’re nearly impossible to overeat and may contribute to weight loss by making you feel full for several hours. Occasionally, I count this snack as an actual meal because it’s so filling! 🥑🥩

I’m also pretty late to the party when it comes to sauerkraut. I remember eating sauerkraut with brats and hot dogs as a kid. We ate the garbage kraut from the can. Sure, it tasted pretty good with a brat but no one’s gonna just eat that stuff directly out of the can.

Years ago, my mom gave me some of her homemade sauerkraut and encouraged me to eat a few forkfuls per day for the gut health benefits. I ignored her. 🥦👩🍽️

The kraut sat in the fridge for months until my roommate helped herself. She raved about how awesome it was. I ate a few bites, and it wasn’t bad.

I continued to eat a few bites per day for health reasons. And then a strange thing happened; I started craving it! 🍏🧑‍⚕️

At some point, I just couldn’t get enough! I started combining it with everything, as a side dish to dinner as well as eggs in the morning. I read about someone mashing it up with an avocado and BOOM- my new favorite, easy snack!

The reason why I started to crave it was because my gut microbiome started getting healthier and started communicating with me louder about what it wants. 🦟🤰🤐

The healthier you get, the more your body craves healthy stuff.

Sauerkraut is among the healthiest foods made from one of the oldest food preparation methods, which is fermentation.

Here are some bullet points about its health benefits, plus a recipe if you’re feeling ambitious: Healthy and Delicious Raw Sauerkraut Recipe (mercola.com) 🥬🔥✨

  • Anti-cancer properties

  • Excellent source of vitamin C

  • Supports bone growth

  • Maintains good eye health

  • Fights inflammation

  • Helps prevent obesity and diabetes

  • Improves mood and physical health

  • Regulates fat absorption

  • Produces B vitamins and vitamin K2

Please don’t buy the sauerkraut in the can; it contains none of these health benefits and tastes like garbage. You’re looking for the kraut in the refrigerator section of the grocery store. 🗑️🥫🥙

When you read the ingredient label it should say cabbage and salt; that’s it. Unless you’re getting a fancy kraut mixed with other veggies (garlic, beets, carrots, etc.).

Not all sauerkraut tastes the same. I’ve figured out the brands that I like and don’t like. It’s good to change up brands occasionally as you’ll get a different mix of probiotics with different brands. Your gut bacteria like the variety. 💙🏥🌋

I’ve read that sauerkraut is so probiotic rich that a few forkfuls per day contain more probiotics than an entire bottle of expensive probiotics!

The health benefits of my avocado/sauerkraut snack are impressive, but in all honesty, I eat it so much because it’s delicious! ❤️✨🔥I hope you enjoy this beautiful week!
